Can you get PIP for fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, fatigue, stiffness and "fibro fog". Symptoms often change from day to day, which makes PIP harder to explain, but the rules are on your side: you can only be treated as able to do something if you can do it reliably, repeatedly and in a reasonable time. The key is to describe what really happens, including the cost of doing something: if making lunch means you have to lie down for the afternoon, you can't do it repeatedly. To qualify, your difficulties need to have lasted at least 3 months and be expected to last at least another 9. You need 8 points in a component for the standard rate and 12 for the enhanced rate. See how PIP points work. PIP activities fibromyalgia often affects ActivityHow it can affect youUp to Preparing foodStanding to cook, lifting pans, chopping, and the fatigue afterwards. Needing someone to help or keep you safe scores 4 points.8 pts Washing and bathingGetting in and out of the bath or shower, washing your hair, and recovering afterwards.8 pts Dressing and undressingPain and stiffness with socks, shoes and fastenings, especially in the morning.8 pts Managing therapyNeeding reminders for medication, especially with fibro fog.8 pts Moving aroundHow far you can walk reliably and repeatedly, not on a one-off good day.12 pts Everyone is different. Other activities may apply to you too: go through all 12 in our PIP points calculator. Example: how the points add up Alex is 45 and has fibromyalgia. Most days, pain and fatigue mean Alex needs help with daily tasks from their husband. ActivityWhat happensPoints Preparing food1e: Needs supervision or assistance to prepare or cook a simple mealNeeds help to cook, and has dropped hot pans.4 Managing therapy3b: Needs an aid or appliance, supervision, prompting or assistance to manage medication or monitor a conditionNeeds reminders because of fibro fog.1 Washing and bathing4e: Needs assistance to get in or out of a bath or showerNeeds help getting in and out of the shower.3 Dressing and undressing6d: Needs assistance to dress or undress their lower bodyNeeds help with socks, shoes and trousers.2 Moving around12b: Can stand and move more than 50 metres but no more than 200 metresCan walk about 100 metres before needing to stop.4 Daily living: 10 points (standard rate). Mobility: 4 points (no award). Alex's 4 mobility points aren't enough for an award. If Alex could only walk 50 metres reliably and repeatedly, that would score 8. This is an illustration, not a prediction. Your award depends on your own circumstances, evidence and assessment. Questions people ask What are my chances of getting PIP with fibromyalgia? It depends on how fibromyalgia affects you, not the diagnosis. People with fibromyalgia do get PIP, and the clearer your form is about what happens on most days, the better your chances. How do I explain good days and bad days?PIP looks at what's true on more than half of days. Say how many bad days you have in a typical week, what they're like, and what a better day still involves. Is fibromyalgia a disability? It can be. For PIP, what matters is whether it affects your daily living or mobility, and has done for 3 months and is expected to for 9 more.
