Can you get PIP for ADHD?

Yes, if ADHD makes everyday tasks hard to start, finish or do safely. PIP isn't awarded for the diagnosis, but for how it affects you.

Can you get PIP for ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can affect many of the things PIP looks at: preparing food, remembering medication, managing money, keeping appointments and coping with journeys. Many adults with ADHD don't think of it as a disability that PIP covers, but it can be.

What matters is the help you need. Prompting (someone reminding or encouraging you), supervision (someone keeping you safe) and assistance all score points, even if nobody gives you that help at the moment.

To qualify, your difficulties need to have lasted at least 3 months and be expected to last at least another 9. You need 8 points in a component for the standard rate and 12 for the enhanced rate. See how PIP points work.

Example: how the points add up

Sam is 24 and has ADHD. Sam's partner reminds them to eat, take medication and get dressed, and handles the bills.

Daily living: 9 points (standard rate). Mobility: 0 points (no award). Sam's journeys are fine when the route is familiar, so they score no mobility points.

This is an illustration, not a prediction. Your award depends on your own circumstances, evidence and assessment.

Tips for your PIP form

  • Describe what happens without prompting, not what happens when your partner or parent steps in.
  • Give real examples: the times you've left the cooker on, missed medication, or lost a payment.
  • Say how long tasks take you, and how often you abandon them halfway.
  • If ADHD comes with anxiety, depression or autism, explain how each affects you.
  • For each activity, say whether you can do it safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and in a reasonable time. Our guide to the PIP form explains each question.

Evidence that helps

  • Your diagnosis letter or report from a psychiatrist or specialist ADHD service.
  • Your prescription list.
  • A letter from a partner, parent or support worker describing the prompting they give.

Send copies, not originals, with your name and National Insurance number on each page. Then read our PIP assessment guide to prepare for the next step.

Questions people ask

How much PIP can you get for ADHD?

It depends on your points, not the diagnosis. Many people with ADHD who qualify get the standard rate of the daily living component, which is £76.70 a week in 2026/27. Some score enough for the enhanced rate, or for mobility too.

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis?

A diagnosis helps, but PIP is based on how your condition affects you. If you're waiting for an assessment, you can still claim, and describe your difficulties in detail.

Can I get PIP for ADHD if I work?

Yes. PIP isn't means-tested and you can claim whether or not you work.
