Question 6Washing and bathing

I can’t get in or out of the bath on my own because my knees give way without warning. My partner helps me most days. A wash takes me around 40 minutes, and on bad days I can’t wash at all because of the pain.

Example answers, written from what the person told us

What the assessment looks at

Twelve everyday activities. That's all it's about.

PIP doesn't score your diagnosis. It scores how your condition affects these activities, and whether you can do them safely, reliably and in a reasonable time.

Preparing foodTaking nutritionManaging therapyWashing and bathingManaging toilet needsDressing and undressingCommunicating verballyReading and understandingEngaging with othersMaking budgeting decisionsPlanning and following journeysMoving around

It's not that you can't explain your life. It's that the form doesn't tell you what it's really asking.

Most people describe their condition. The assessor is looking for something else: the help you need, the risks you face, how long things take and what your bad days look like, activity by activity. Leave those out and points can be missed.

15questions on the form

Each one is a blank box with little guidance on what to put in it.

Myths, gently corrected

Things that stop people from claiming.

people say…

"You can't get PIP if you work."

Not true. PIP isn't based on whether you work. It's about how your condition affects daily life and getting around.

people say…

"It's means-tested, so my savings count."

Not true. PIP isn't means-tested. Your income and savings don't affect it, and it's tax-free.

people say…

"It's only for physical disabilities."

Not true. Mental health conditions, learning disabilities and neurodivergence count just the same. What's scored is the impact, not the diagnosis.

Questions

The honest answers.

Is PIP Assistant part of the DWP?

No. We're an independent service. We help you write your answers. You still send your form to the DWP yourself, and only the DWP decides your award.

Can you guarantee I'll get PIP?

No one honestly can. Your award depends on your circumstances, your evidence and the DWP's assessment. What we can do is help you explain your difficulties clearly and completely, which is where a lot of claims fall down.

Will the answers say things that aren't true?

No. Answers are written only from the information you give us. You must read every answer and change anything that isn't accurate before you use it. Giving false information on a benefit claim is an offence, and honest, specific answers are more convincing anyway.

What do I need to have ready?

A list of your conditions and medication, a rough idea of the help you get day to day, and the names of the professionals who treat you (GP, consultant, therapist and so on). It takes most people 10 to 20 minutes.

What do I do with the answers?

Copy them into the matching boxes on your "How your disability affects you" form, adjusting anything you want to. They also make useful notes to have with you at your assessment.

I live in Scotland. Can I use this?

In Scotland, Adult Disability Payment has replaced PIP for new claims. Our answers are written for the PIP form used in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What happens to my health information?

We never store it. Your answers stay on your own device while you fill in the form. When you ask for your document, they're sent securely to our AI provider to be written up, then delivered to you and discarded. Read our privacy policy for the full details.
